20 mph Mobility Scooters

Every machine on this page reaches at least 20 mph. A standard mobility scooter tops out between 4 and 8 mph, so this is a different class of vehicle, built for riders who want to keep up with neighborhood traffic, cover real distance in one trip, or ride trails and open ground rather than sidewalks. Prices run from $2,995 to $19,700.

The list covers two brands, both ridden standing. MIA two and four wheel drive models top out at 25 mph. Folding all terrain EZ-Raiders run 24 to 28 mph.

Speeds shown are the manufacturer top speed on level ground. Real speed drops with rider weight, hills and battery charge. Check your state and local rules before riding any of these on a public road or sidewalk.

What 20 mph actually means on a mobility scooter

Most mobility scooters sold in the US run between 4 and 8 mph, because that is walking pace and it is what sidewalk and indoor use calls for. Our wider fastest mobility scooters collection starts at 10 mph and covers everything above that. This page is the narrow end of it, only the machines that reach 20 mph and up.

Crossing 20 mph changes the machine, not just the number. You get a bigger motor, hydraulic disc brakes instead of drum brakes, a longer wheelbase for stability, and pneumatic tires with real tread. It also changes where you can ride. At these speeds most of these are road or private property machines rather than sidewalk machines, and several models ship with lights, mirrors and turn signals for that reason.

The 25 mph and up models

MIA FOUR X4 at 25 mph, from $8,950

MIA FOUR X4 4x4 four-wheel drive all-terrain mobility scooterGray MIA SPYQE 2x4 electric scooter showing strong frame wide tires and dual motor power

The MIA range tops out at 25 mph and stands out for traction rather than speed. The FOUR X4 runs a 7200W four wheel drive setup, one motor per wheel, with double wishbone suspension, a 30 degree climbing grade and 60 miles per charge. The two wheel drive FOUR X2 at $5,200 and FOUR X2 GT at $5,700 carry the same 25 mph top speed on a lighter frame.

The folding SPYQE at $2,995 and SPYQE GT at $3,245 also top out at 25 mph, and both fold to 17.3 inches for a trunk or a closet.

EZ-Raider HD4 at 28 mph, from $19,700

The EZ-Raider models are folding standing decks built for ground that stops a wheeled scooter. The HD4 reaches 28 mph on a 1200W drive with hydraulic dual piston brakes, 9.5 inch ground clearance and 50 miles of range. The HD2 at $15,900 runs 25 mph and the LW at $11,375 runs 24 mph on a lighter frame.

Choosing between them

Start with whether you need to sit down. Every machine on this page is ridden standing. If you need a seat and a backrest, our fastest mobility scooters collection has seated models that top out lower. If you can stand and want the machine to fold, you are choosing between MIA and EZ-Raider.

Then check weight. The standing models are rated 300 to 440 lbs, which is normal for a single rider but leaves no room for a passenger. If total load matters more than speed, our 600 lb capacity mobility scooters page compares that side directly.

Last, decide how much of the speed you will really use. Once you are past 20 mph, a few more mph rarely settles it. What separates them at that point is range, brakes, suspension and whether the thing folds.

Common questions

Which of these is the quickest?

The EZ-Raider HD4 is the quickest at 28 mph. Every MIA model tops out at 25 mph.

Can I ride a 20 mph scooter on the sidewalk?

In most places no. Sidewalk rules generally assume walking pace, and at 20 mph and above these are treated as road or off road vehicles depending on your state. Several models here ship with lights, mirrors and signals so they can be registered where that is allowed. Check your own state and city rules before you buy.

Do these need a license or insurance?

It depends on the state and on how you ride. A machine used on private property or trails usually needs neither. A machine registered for road use often needs both. We can tell you what each model is set up for, but the registration question has to be answered by your state DMV.

Are any of these covered by Medicare?

No. Medicare covers mobility equipment prescribed for use inside the home, and nothing on this page qualifies. These are recreational and outdoor machines bought out of pocket.

What is the real range at full speed?

Lower than the number on the spec sheet. Range figures are measured at moderate speed with a light rider on level ground. Riding at 25 mph, carrying a heavy load or climbing hills can cut it close to half. Buy for the range you need on your worst day, not your best one.
